Reference and Instruction

reference instructionGeneral Information
The Library staff is specifically trained to help you locate information. They are happy to help you find materials for class assignments or personal interests. By working one-on-one with a librarian, you will learn successful search strategies using tools such as OneSearch, the online catalog URSUS, specific databases, and other reference resources. You may also contact the Reference Librarian for assistance.

Tours
The Blake Library staff will gladly give tours to classes or groups interested in the resources and services of the Library. You may contact Sofia Birden to schedule an appointment. The staff also provides instruction on the use of library resources and computer applications. Please review the "Instruction Services" information below.

Information Literacy: Group Instruction:
The library reference staff provides group instruction to classes in Information Literacy (previously known as bibliographic instruction). Group instruction is available to all courses. The instruction sessions for courses are developed specifically for the class. Faculty may contact Sofia Birden by calling, emailing, or coming by the library to schedule an Information Literacy training session. Please be aware that staff need time to develop a session specific to the course.

Information Literacy: Individual Instruction:
Faculty, Staff, and Students are all welcome to either drop by or schedule an individual instruction session with the library reference staff for instruction on how to use the library. Topics such as Electronic Books, Internet searching, requesting books online are just a few areas in which library staff can help you. You may contact Sofia Birden for more information or to schedule an instruction time.

For more information about Information Literacy, go to Blake Library's section on Information Literacy that breaks down the standards put forth by the Association of College and Research Libraries.
